Field guide · RSUs
Prepare for the event, then reconcile the records.
A vest becomes easier to discuss when the award terms, employer records and broker statement are brought together.
Establish what the award promises
An RSU normally promises shares if its vesting conditions are satisfied; some arrangements settle in cash. The actual terms matter more than the label.
Identify the grant, relevant conditions, schedule, settlement method, currency and restrictions. Vesting, settlement and any later sale may be separate events.
Use three preparation stages
- Before: collect the agreement and schedule, check plan contacts and record any relevant work-country history.
- At the event: reconcile actual award records with payroll and the broker. Ask the responsible party about differences.
- After: keep the evidence together and record any later disposal separately. List questions for the appropriate tax or financial professional.
These are editorial preparation prompts. They do not establish the tax result or that any payroll withholding settles every liability.
Open the vest walkthroughA fictional preparation question
An award document, payroll record and broker statement show different dates or amounts. The useful next step is to identify what each record represents and ask the responsible administrator to explain the difference. This guide does not infer a tax calculation from those documents.
